Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems is seeking a Principal Manufacturing Engineer to support multiple space programs in El Segundo, CA. The selected candidate will perform manufacturing and mechanical related tasks for the program and is expected to work with a team of specialized junior and senior manufacturing and mechanical engineers to support the design, build, and test of EO/IR hardware designs. Responsibilities include reviewing engineering models/drawings with regard to manufacturability and producibility. Candidate must be proficient at reading and understanding written shop processes, engineering drawings, engineering change notices, work instructions, procedures and routers and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. Solid understanding of fixture design requirements (i.e. datums, clamping, cutting forces, wear, etc.) and fabrication. Strong knowledge of machining, assembly and inspection processes for complex, tight toleranced 5-axis machined parts. Demonstrated ability to interface effectively with machinists, support groups, customers, and management.
Demonstrated problem solving ability in resolving complex problems arising during the fabrication process. Includes investigation and recommendations for producibility enhancements.

Prior experience with CAD/CAM software, preferably Creo/ProE. The candidate will likely be tasked with interfacing with suppliers including possible on-site visits. The candidate will be expected to present his or her work for peer reviews. Candidate will be expected to follow established procedures and instructions while working closely with program / functional supervision to ensure the overall design objectives are met. Contacts are primarily with the immediate section manager, team lead, project leaders and other personnel (peers) within the applicable program.

Required Skills:
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in manufacturing or mechanical engineering and product support
  • Machine shop experience across various types of materials (i.e. aluminum, titanium, beryillium, etc.)
  • Experience with electro-optical and electro-mechanical program manufacturing operations and processes
  • Working knowledge of commercial CAD software, such as Creo, Solidworks, or Unigraphics and design experience
  • Experience in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance analysis for drawings
  • Experience with M/S Office Tools i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio
  • Knowledge of DFMA principles
  • Working knowledge of supplier development and coordination, process capability trade studies, cost estimating, rapid prototyping, and multi-axis CNC machining
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment
  • Must be able to interface with management, customers, and suppliers.
  • US Citizenship
  • Ability to obtain a DoD Security Clearance
  • Ability to make on-site visits at suppliers as needed

Desired Skills:
  • Knowledge of modern additive manufacturing techniques and design optimization for additive mfg
  • Experience with NC programming
  • Environmental test experience
  • Knowledge of Windchill
  • Prior experience in Defense or Aerospace
  • Experience leading MRB, FRB activities is a plus

Required Education:
BS in Mechanical Engineering or related field from accredited university.

Desired Education:
MS in Mechanical Engineering or related field from accredited university


U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs the candidate to be able to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance.

This position requires a U.S. person or the ability to obtain an Export Authorization from the appropriate government agency for non-U.S. persons.
